Reflection on Unit 2- Writing as a Stage, a Process and a Trait by Martina Humphreys
Everything in life progresses through stages and each stage is just as important as the next. Over the course of two class sessions, we learnt about writing as a stage. These stages include:
1. Emergent Stage
2. Early stage
3. Transitional stage
4. Fluent stage
From my experience as a teacher, the transitional stage can be the most difficult. In this stage students will use a variety of strategies to spell more difficult words, writing in more genres, greater control over capitalization & punctuation, as well as developing their ideas & organization.Whew! That sounds like a lot, however once students are guided through the process, the stages can be manageable or even perfected after constant practice. The processes include; prewriting, drafting, revising, editing and publishing. There are also characteristics or traits in writing which are; ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions and presentation.
Among the traits, the voice stood out the most to me where persons can express themselves, share unique ideas and apply original thinking. I was also given the task of teaching the conventions trait to my classmates. In doing this, I highlighted ways to make writing correct and understandable through a checklist, a conventions song and through my very own system called S.I.C (Sounds in Corrections).
(Clap- for capital,
Mmm- for a missing comma,
Beeeep- for a missing full stop,
Ooh ooh- for misspelt words).
On the second day of this unit, my classmates and I had the pleasure of watching our lecturer demonstrate ways teachers can assist our students with the traits in writing through a series of activities. Out of the many activities that we participated in, "Delightful descriptions" and "It's your life" activity, had the most impact on my learning. "It's your life" taught us how to organize our thoughts through a sequence that flows and "Delightful descriptions helped us to be more detailed and creative while being positive at the same time.
Unit two was definitely memorable and I cannot wait to use what I have learnt with my students in the future. Where there is a will, there is a way!
I enjoyed reading this blog Martina, I can see the great impact that the Unit had on you that you were able to create strategies to help students edit their work. There is clear evidence that you reflected because of how the information was layered out, you mentioned which stage, process, and traits that stood out to you.
ReplyDeleteI also enjoyed reading your blog and i hope that the lessons in class help you to be a better teacher in the classroom.
